How much does it cost to file for bankruptcy?

Please see the Fee Schedule. 

 
 

How can I pay a filing fee?

Payments can be made online or by cashier's check or money order. Payments made by check or money order should include the case number and the debtor's last name and be made payable to: “Clerk, U.S. Bankruptcy Court.” More information is available on our website.

 
 

How can I view a current or past bankruptcy case?

You can view your case online by signing up for a PACER account.

 

You can also use the public access computer in the Madison or Eau Claire courthouse. The clerk's office is open from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM on Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Please note that there is a per page copy fee when printing from clerk's office computers. 

 

You can call the Multi-Court Voice Case Information System (McVCIS) at 1-866-222-8029. This system allows you to dial into the court's database and receive basic case information free of charge.

 
 

How can I get the documents needed to file?

All bankruptcy forms are available electronically on the Court's website. 

If you wish to file a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition, you can use the Electronic Self-Representation (eSR) bankruptcy petition preparation system. More information is available on the Court's website.

 
 

How can I file bankruptcy documents?

You may either file documents in person at the Madison or Eau Claire courthouse, or you may mail them to us. We do not accept pleadings filed via e-mail or fax. Our mailing address is:

Where can I obtain a credit counseling or financial management certificate?

Please visit the U.S. Trustee Program's website for a list of approved credit counseling and debtor education providers.

 
 

Where can I find information to help me complete the means test?

Please visit the U.S. Trustee Program's website to obtain information needed to complete the means test.

 
 

How can I contact the trustee?

Your Notice of Bankruptcy Filing contains contact information for the case trustee. Please refer to this notice for Chapter 7 cases.
